What is sedation dentistry?
The use of medications in Sedation dentistry helps our little patients feel relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. Sedation can help enhance cooperation and minimize fear and/or discomfort related to dental treatment. There are various kinds of sedation available in our dental office for the kids.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous Oxide also known as laughing gas is a safe, relaxing, and effective sedative agent that is combined with oxygen and inhaled through a mini mask. The mini mask is normally scented and sits perfectly over the nose. We provide several scented noses like cherry, bubble gum, grape, and orange.
Nitrous oxide is the mildest and gentle sedative applied in pediatric dentistry. The main intention is not to put our little patients to sleep but to put the patient in a more relaxed condition. Nitrous Oxide is beneficial for minimizing anxiety, lessening improper movements toward dental methods, improving patience for longer processes, lessening the gag reflex, and helping in the dental treatment of an individual with special health care requirements.
Oral Conscious Sedation
If nitrous oxide sedation is not enough, oral conscious sedation or “oral sedation” can come into play. It helps to enhance cooperation and minimize any tension and/or discomfort connected with the dental method. Our pediatric dentist will provide a liquid medication, which your kid needs to drink. The medication is chosen depending upon your kid’s overall health status, level of nervousness, and dental processes recommendations. Most of the kids feel relaxed and/or drowsy and may fall into a light sleep but they can be awakened with a gentle shake easily.
Oral sedation does not intend to make a patient unconscious or unresponsive as general anesthesia does. Some kids may not experience relaxation but may have a different reaction like agitation or crying. These are similar responses to the medicines and may stop us from completing the dental process. In any such case, our kid-friendly staff will observe your kid’s response to the medications and offer assistance as required.
General Anesthesia
General anaesthesia is the last step that we adopt. Young children who suffer from a high level of anxiety or require special care may require their dental treatment to complete under general anaesthesia. We also recommend this process to children who are suffering from extensive decay.
Very young kids who have high dental fear, or who have special health requirements and who have excessive teeth decay may be recommended to get their dental procedure performed under general anesthesia.
General anesthesia makes your kid fall asleep entirely. This would be the same as if he/she was having their tonsils eliminated, ear tubes positioned, or a hernia treated and mended. Every required dental treatment is done in a proper setting and helps lessen the rise of a lifelong fear of dentists and oral treatment. Once all of the caries are cleaned, proper dietary and home care guidance will be shared for following at home for a path to healthy dental practices for your little one.
Our pediatric dentist provides general anesthesia in our dental office or a hospital setting.
